Freight Broker

WHAT IS A FREIGHT BROKER AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

A freight broker is a middleman between shippers and carriers. Instead of taking possession of the freight, the broker facilitates communication between the shipper and the carrier. They’re the ones making sure the handoff goes smoothly between carriers and shippers, and that freight arrives safely, on time.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FREIGHT BROKER AND AGENT?

A broker is the owner of his or her own company. They are required to meet all legal requirements (Authority, Bond, BOC-3) to operate as a broker. An agent works under the authority of the broker and typically receives a percentage of the brokerage fee.

DO I NEED TO TAKE A TRAINING TO BECOME A FREIGHT BROKER?

No, the FMCSA does not require you to take a training to acquire your authority to become a freight broker. There is NO TEST to obtain your authority.

IF I DO NOT NEED TRAINING, HOW CAN I GET MY LICENSE/ AUTHORITY?

You can apply straight through the FMCSA’s website.

WHAT IS FMCSA?

Federal Motor Safety Administration

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO APPLY FOR MY FREIGHT BROKER LICENSE/AUTHORITY?

The FMCSA charges $300.00 to apply for a registration with an operating status of a motor property carrier, motor passenger carrier, freight forwarder or freight broker. You will also need a Bond and BOC-3. Your start up is estimated to be around 5k. We go more in depth about this in our training.

HOW MUCH ANNUAL INCOME CAN I MAKE AS A FREIGHT BROKER?

Earnings are determined on your motivation to succeed, and also how you adapt to the industry. A full-time freight broker can easily make from $40,000 to well over six figures. This is a recession proof business that provides unlimited income potential. Keep in mind everything you see and use at some point was transported on a truck.

HOW SOON AFTER I GET MY LICENSE/AUTHORITY WILL I START MAKING REVENUE?

This business is based on contacts and relationships. Your ability to network will drive your business. Typically it can take three to six months of disciplined work to show a substantial profit. Sometimes it takes much less time, sometimes more, but once you begin securing the right customers, they normally have residual shipping, so the sale repeats itself over and over – and you don’t need hundreds of customers to make a great living in this field. Your level of success depends on many factors, such as your level of determination, your tenacity, and your genuine desire to help your customers succeed.
